DHAKA, Aug 25 (AFP) - A Bangladeshi newspaper said Wednesday that a little known Islamic group claimed responsibility for trying to kill opposition leader Sheikh Hasina Wajed in a weekend grenade attack at a party rally.
The widely read Bengali newspaper, Prothom Alo, reported that the group calling itself, "Himatul Zihad," said in an e-mail that it was planning a fresh attempt on Sheikh Hasina's life within a week.
"Don't think that Sheikh Hasina is out of danger. We have failed to use our opportunity but to fulfil our goal, now we are alert," the daily quoted the message as saying.
"Tell her to be prepared, we are coming and within the next seven days we will reach our goal. This is our promise," the e-mail reportedly said.
There was no immediate government comment on the threat which came on the second day of a general strike protesting the attack on the rally that killed 20 people and wounded hundreds.
Since last Saturday when the attack occurred, opposition officials have said it was an attempt to assassinate Sheikh Hasina whose car was fired on as she was rushed away from the scene by aides and bodyguards, one of whom died.
