ISPARTA - A Turkish university decorated a British professor with honorary doctorate on Wednesday.
Turkey's Suleyman Demirel University honored British professor Andrew Mango with honorary doctorate in an international symposium on the university campus in the Mediterranean province of Isparta.
Prof. Mango is known for his books on Turkey and Ataturk.
During the opening ceremony of the International Turkish Republic Symposium, Mango said that he had concluded his latest book before he came to Turkey, which would be his seventh book on Turkey and his last book.
Mango said the was telling about the period between the Treaty of Sevres (1920) and the Treaty of Lausanne (1923).
Born in Istanbul in 1926, Mango is a British author. Mango's early years were passed in Istanbul but in the mid-1940s he left for Ankara and a job as a press officer in the British Embassy. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1947 and has lived in London ever since. He holds degrees from London University, including a doctorate on Persian literature. He joined BBC's Turkish section while still a student and spent his entire career in the External Services, rising to be Turkish Programme Organiser and then Head of the South European Service. He retired in 1986.
He also wrote copiously in his spare time, publishing books and pamphlets on Turkey of which Turkey (1968) and Discovering Turkey (1971) are the most important. In addition he wrote a large number of shorter articles and working papers for British and American think-tanks on Turkey and its strategic role. He has also written for many years an annual review of major western studies of Turkey for the academic journal, Middle East Studies.
His other books are Turkey and the War on Terrorism (2005), The Turks Today (2004),Ataturk: The Biography of the Founder of Modern Turkey (2000), Turkey: The Challenge of a New Role (1994).
