Parliament To Debate Motion About Dispatch Of Troops To Abroad

ANKARA - Turkish Parliament will convene on Wednesday to debate a Prime Ministry motion to extend by one year the government's mandate to order military strikes against the PKK terrorist organization in northern Iraq as of October 17th, 2008.
The government won a one-year parliamentary authorization on October 17th last year for cross-border raids against the PKK.
Since last October, the Turkish army has carried out several air strikes and a week-long ground incursion against PKK targets in northern part of Iraq.
The motion empowers the government over a second one-year period to order the military forces to cross into north of Iraq where PKK terrorists took shelter.
If the motion is approved, it will be the 22nd decision made by the Turkish parliament to dispatch troops to foreign countries since 1950.
