IZMIR - Belgian Regional Minister Emir Kir, who is currently in Turkey to hold a series of talks, said on Tuesday that wastes constituted a remarkable resource, rather than a problem.
Kir, accompanied by a delegation, attended a meeting held at the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry (EBSO) headquarters in the Aegean province of Izmir.
Addressing industrialists at the meeting, Kir said Turkey and Belgium should cooperate in waste management.
"In our region, wastes are not buried under soil, but they are recycled. Unfortunately, wastes are still buried in Turkey and this pollutes both the water and the environment. I suggest we cooperate for the solution of this problem," Kir said.
Kir also said that he would hold talks with municipal officials and several companies in Izmir in order to carry out joint investments on such issue.
During the meeting, EBSO chairperson Tamer Taskin made a presentation on Turkey's and Izmir's economy as well.
Following the speeches, representatives of Turkish and Belgian companies held bilateral talks.
