DUBAI - Dubai developers Nakheel on Sunday announced plans to build a tower which could stand one kilometre high (3,280 feet), beating the booming city state's own world record.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulaim, president of Dubai World, a holding company, said the project would be "one of a kind", the Emirati news agency WAM reported.
A whole town is to be built covering 270 hectares (665 acres), forming a new Dubai and including "a tower which could reach one kilometre in height," Sulaim was quoted as saying.
The Nakheel Harbour and Tower project has a target date of 2020 for completion at a cost of billions of dirhams, he said, referring to the Emirati currency which is worth 27 US cents.
The world's tallest building, the yet to be completed Burj Dubai tower reached a height of 688 metres (2,257 feet) at the start of September and is still growing, according to developers Emaar.
It now boasts 160 storeys, the highest skyscraper in the world, Emaar said.
