Austria's Social Democrat Party has won a majority in the Parliament receiving 29.71 percent of the vote in the snap elections.
The Conservative People's Party is holding on to the second place with 25.61 percent of the votes, Interior Minister Maria Fekter said.
The official Preliminary result indicates that the two parties popularity leve has plunged to the lowest in decades. The parties were part of a so-called grand coalition that fell apart in July.
Heinz-Christian Strache, the leader of the Freedom Party, which received 18.01 percent of the vote, said that he was interested in becoming chancellor. "Today, we are the winners of election night,'' Strache said.
The Alliance for the Future of Austria won 10.98 percent of the ballot.
There are 183 seats in Austria's parliament. If the preliminary results are confirmed, Strache's Freedom Party will have won 35 seats while the Alliance will have 21, AP reported.
The exact distribution of the parliamentary seats will be known when final results, including absentee ballots, are officially published on October 6.
