ATHENS, Aug 24 (AFP) - A member of Greece's Olympic judo squad who leapt from a third-storey apartment after an argument with her boyfriend just days before the Athens Games has died, a hospital source said Tuesday.
Eleni Ioannou, 20, had been hospitalised for 17 days after sustaining multiple injuries when she plunged from the balcony of boyfriend Yiorgos Chryssostomidis's apartment on August 7.
Three days later Chryssotomidis attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the same balcony. The 24-year-old's condition is improving, hospital sources said Tuesday.
The tragic affair saw the couple portrayed as a modern-day Romeo and Juliet in media and transfixed Greece on the eve of the Olympics.
Ioannou's coach Georges Mountakis told reporters that the young judo star had been suffering from "teenage psychological problems".
Police said Chryssostomidis had been in trouble in the past for drugs.
Greek media has reported that the couple had quarrelled violently because Chryssostomidis was jealous of his girlfriend and did not want her to move into the athletes village during the Olympics.
Ioannou had been national champion in the +78kg category for the past three years and won the bronze medal in the 2002 Balkan Games.
She was replaced in the Olympic team by 22-year-old Eleni Patsiou.
