U.S. Soldier To Plead Guilty On Some Iraq Prison Abuse Charges

MANNHEIM, Germany, Aug 24 (AFP) - A US soldier accused of cruelty to Iraqi inmates at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison has agreed to plead guilty to some charges against him, his lawyer said Tuesday.
In exchange for the plea, Staff Sergeant Ivan Frederick, a suspected ringleader in the abuses, will be found not guilty on other charges, said his lawyer, Gary Myers, without providing further details.
"He has accepted, unlike many, the responsibility that was generated by the corruptive procedure at Abu Ghraib," Myers said.
"Some of the initial charges have been dismissed, some will remain," he said after Frederick's pre-trial hearing in Mannheim, southern Germany. "He will be found not guilty on some charges."
Frederick, 37, is charged with cruelty and maltreatment, dereliction of duty, assault and indecent acts.
