IZMIR/ANKARA/ISTANBUL - Several people were taken into custody within the scope of Ergenekon inquiry in Istanbul, Ankara and western province of Izmir on Tuesday.
Journalists Tuncay Ozkan and Adnan Bulut, Istanbul Esenyurt district`s former mayor Gurbuz Capan, and seven other people including a medical doctor and a police officer were taken into custody.
An alleged criminal network that came to be known as "Ergenekon" was revealed after police seized hand grenades, TNT explosives and fuses in a shanty house in Istanbul on June 12th, 2007. Several Turkish figures, including retired senior army officers, were detained and sent to prison within the scope of the investigation.
The indictment regarding "Operation Ergenekon" was filed at an Istanbul court, indicting 86 people on charges of attempting to overthrow Turkish government. The 2,455-page indictment includes 86 suspects, most of whom are in prison.
An Istanbul court will hold the first hearing of the case on October 20th.
