Turkey's Foreign Minister On Cyprus Issue

NEW YORK - Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said that it was very important to find a fair and permanent solution to Cyprus issue.
Babacan, who is currently in New York for UN General Assembly meetings, said that Turkey considered 2008 as a window of opportunity, and supported positive approach of Turkish Cypriots to start comprehensive talks.
Babacan said that Turkey welcomed starting of talks between President Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias on September 3rd.
Babacan said that the support to Annan Plan in 2004 was the evidence that Turkey wanted solution in the island.
Babacan said that Turkey was a guarantor country in Cyprus and this was an official position.
