Turkey's Foreign Minister Meets His Azerbaijani Counterpart

NEW YORK - Turkey's foreign minister met his Azerbaijani counterpart in New York on Sunday.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan had a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov at the Turkish House in New York.
Also, Babacan is foreseen to have a trilateral meeting with Mammadyarov and Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian at the UN headquarters within this week.
The meeting will probably take place on Friday, and Babacan is expected to first meet Nalbandian. The trilateral meeting is expected to begin after Babacan-Nalbandian meeting.
Babacan and Mammadyarov had a meeting at a time when serious developments were occurring in the Caucasus, the spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry told reporters after the meeting.
Spokesman Burak Ozugergin quoted Babacan as saying that Turkey was exerting efforts to normalize life in Georgia, and stressing that Turkey saw the atmosphere that occurred after the crisis in Georgia as an opportunity to review some regional problems.
Also speaking to journalists, Mammadyarov appreciated Turkey's role in the Caucasus and said his country was searching a solution within the scope of "win-win" principle in the region.
Mammadyarov also supported Turkey's proposal to set up Caucasus Cooperation and Stability Platform.
Also, Azerbaijan sees a tripartite meeting with Turkey and Armenia as positive, and considers that it can be an opportunity to resolve problems.
Turkey also attaches importance to a trilateral meeting with Armenia and Azerbaijan, and also considers it an opportunity to discuss all issues concerning regional stability and welfare, including the Caucasus platform.
Babacan will have talks with around 40 foreign ministers on the sidelines of the 63rd session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
The Turkish foreign minister is expected to meet U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Monday.
