Babacan: A Comprehensive Constitutional Amendment Is A Need For Turkey

ANKARA - Turkey's Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said on Monday that Turkey needed a comprehensive constitutional amendment.
Speaking to Channel 24 in Brussels, Babacan said that nearly one third of the current Constitution of Turkey was amended within the scope of EU reforms but it was not still adjusted to Copenhagen criteria a hundred percent.
Noting that a constitutional amendment was a need for Turkey, Babacan said that they wanted to settle a broad understanding basis before arrangements were made to amend the Constitution.
Regarding the reform process in Turkey, Babacan said that Turkish Parliament adopted 29 laws related with EU acquis in 2007-2008 period. He added that currently there were 32 draft laws presented to Parliament.
Briefing about draft National Program, Babacan said that the draft included more than 130 legal arrangements and over 340 secondary arrangements. He added that they wanted to give a final shape to the National Program with a wide consensus.
Babacan said that they targeted to complete debates on the National Program until October 7th, and then rapidly implement it.
