ATHENS, Aug 23 (AFP) - Greek firefighters on Monday battled for hours to put out a fire that destroyed 60 hectares (148 acres) of pinewood forest east of Athens, the fire service said Monday, adding that none of the Olympic venues were threatened.
The fire broke out near the archaeological site of Vravrona, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Athens.
The Games` shooting and equestrian centre at Markopoulo, some 10 km (6 miles) away, was in no danger, the spokesman said.
Some 120 firemen with 30 vehicles and five airplanes battled the flames which were brought under control by late afternoon.
A spokesman for the Greek fire service told AFP that no houses were damaged by the blaze.
