DAMASCUS, Aug 23 (AFP) - Jordanian Prime Minister Faisal al-Fayez rounded off a three-day visit to Syria by meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for talks on "ways to consolidate economic and social relations" between their two countries, the official news agency Sana reported Monday.
Fayez, who arrived in the Syrian capital on Saturday, has now returned home, Sana added.
On Sunday, a group of Jordanian government ministers who accompanied Fayez on his official visit, held talks with their Syrian counterparts on cooperation in the fields of commerce, finance, customs, industry and irrigation.
Interior Ministers Ali Hammud of Syria and Jordan's Samir Habashneh discussed security on their common border and Syrian TV indicated they had agreed to "surmount everything that impedes cooperation and coordination".
Recent events have put a strain on bilateral relations, particularly the arrest by Syrian border police of five Jordanian lorry drivers carrying Israeli goods to Iraq. They were held for a month before being released.
Unlike Syria, Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.
In April, Jordan claimed to have foiled chemical weapons attacks, the first of their kind planned by Al-Qaeda, which could have killed tens of thousands of people. A Syrian was among the six suspected terrorists arrested, but Jordan repeatedly insisted that Damascus certainly had no knowledge of the network.
Fayez was also accompanied by Vice-Premier and Trade and Industry Minister Mohamad Halayka, Minister for Water and Agriculture Hazem Nasser, Finance and Justice Minister Mohamad Abu Hammur and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Salah Bashir.
