Greek Prosecutor Looks Into Doped Weightlifter Case

ATHENS, Aug 23 (AFP) - A Greek prosecutor has opened an investigation into the doping case of Greek weightlifter Leonidas Sampanis, who had his Olympic bronze medal withdrawn after failing a drugs test, court officials said Monday.
Prosecutors are obliged to look into doping incidents under Greek law, which are punishable by fines and maximum prison sentences of up to a year.
The case was opened by the prosecutor of the Athens port of Piraeus, under whose jurisdiction the Olympic weightlifting venue of Nikaea falls, where Sampanis had competed on Monday.
The results of the inquiry will be passed on to an Athens prosecutor investigating the case of disgraced Greek sprinters Kostadinos Kenteris and Ekaterini Thanou, who withdrew last week from the Olympics after failing to show up at a doping control, the official said.
