Turkish, Greek Cypriot Leaders Meet In Bid To End Island's Division

LEFKOSA - Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders met Thursday as part of their renewed efforts to reunify the divided island of Cyprus in the first substantive negotiations in four years.
Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias met more than four hours in the UN-controlled buffer zone, talking on administration and power sharing.
Talat and Christofias left without making any remarks for the media.
"Today`s talks went well and the two leaders have agreed not to talk to the press about their future meetings," Alexander Downer, UN secretary general`s special envoy for Cyprus, told reporters after the meeting.
Downer said the two leaders would meet again on September 18 and they would continue with the issues of administration and power sharing.
"The talks are continuing and the two leaders are doing their best. But it is a long road ahead," Downer said.
