U.N. Secretary General Calls Turkish & Greek Cypriot Leaders

UNITED NATIONS - The secretary general of the United Nations (UN) had phone conversations with the Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders on Monday.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon spoke by phone to President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias, spokesperson Michelle Montas said.
The secretary general congratulated the two leaders on officially launching full-fledged talks aiming to find a settlement to Cyprus problem, Montas also said.
Montas said that Ban also had a phone talk with Alexander Downer, his special envoy for Cyprus who was actually in the Greek capital of Athens.
The spokesperson confirmed that Downer would proceed to the Turkish capital of Ankara on Wednesday on a one-day visit and meet President Abdullah Gul, Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ali Babacan.
