KIEV, Aug 20 (AFP) - Thirteen people were injured Friday, two of them seriously, when two blasts rocked a market on the outskirts of Kiev, Ukrainian officials said.
The blasts, set off by home-made bombs, took place within minutes of each other, Vassyl Khoroshun, spokesman for the Ukrainian emergency situations ministry, told AFP.
"According to preliminary data, those were home-made explosive devices," Khoroshun said.
Eight of those hurt were rushed to hospital and two were in surgery, while five others were treated at the scene and released, he said.
Police said they were investigating the cause of the blasts, which occurred as the market was preparing to shut down for the day.
The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that the home-made explosive devices were hidden in trash cans at the Troyeshchinsky market on the outer edge of Kiev.
The Ukrainian capital has been the scene of several blasts, in recent years, some of them fatal.
Last year, a car exploded in central Kiev, killing one and injuring three. And in 2002, two people were injured when a bomb went off in a building in the capital`s center.
