ANKARA - A German consumer electronics chain will open a store in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Thursday, company officials said on Tuesday.
The consumer electronics retailer "Media Markt" will open its biggest store in Turkey at a shopping mall named "Ankara Forum".
"This will be our sixth store opened in Turkey in a year," Mustafa Altindag, the country director of Media Saturn responsible for operations in Turkey, told a press conference.
Altindag said that their target was to sell the most technological product at a very reasonable price, and told reporters that there would be more than 70,000 different kinds of products in the store to be opened in Ankara`s Etlik neighborhood.
The director general said that their company aimed to become a leader in Turkish electronics market.
Media Markt is a German chain of stores selling consumer electronics with numerous branches throughout Europe. It is Europe`s largest retailer of consumer electronics. The first store was opened in Munich, Germany in 1979.
Today, it is owned by MediaSaturn Holding, which also owns the rival Saturn chain of electronics and media stores. MediaSaturn Holding in turn is owned by the German retail company METRO AG.
The company decided to open stores abroad, and opened its first abroad store in France in 1989. Then it inaugurated stores in Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, Sweden and Russia.
The first Media Markt store in Turkey was opened in 2007. At the beginning of 2008, Media Markt has over 500 superstores throughout Europe.
