U.S. Department Of State Says Turkey Allows Passage Of U.S. Navy Ships Carrying Humanitarian Aid To Georgia

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Department of State has said that Turkey allowed three U.S. navy ships to pass through Turkish straits to deliver humanitarian relief supplies to war-torn Georgia.
Robert Wood, spokesman for the Department of State, said at the daily press briefing that a U.S. coast guard cutter would accompany two navy vessels.
The vessels carrying thousands of blankets, hygienic supplies and baby food would transit from the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea through Turkish Straits under the Montreux Convention of 1936, he said.
It would be the first relief to be sent to Georgia by ships since the escalation of tension in the Caucasus, Wood added.
