U.S. Official Says U.S. Did Not Make A Formal Demand On Achieving Passage Of Vessels Through Turkish Straits

WASHINGTON D.C. - Matthew Bryza, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs said, on Tuesday they did not make a formal demand from Turkey in regard to achieving passage of U.S. ships through the Turkish straits to aid to war-torn Georgia.
At a news conference, Bryza said they held consultations on passage of U.S. vessels through the Turkish straits under the the Montreux Convention.
Bryza said the United States respected the Montreux Convention and U.S. officials held consultations under this convention.
Vessel passage through the Turkish straits is regulated by the Montreux Convention signed in 1936.
