Greek Police To Get Ten Days Off For Overtime Put In During Games

ATHENS, Aug 18 (AFP) - Greek police protecting the Athens Olympics were encouraged to keep their eyes peeled with ten days extra leave after the Games, police sources said Wednesday.
The decision was issued by Greek police chief Fotis Nassiakos Tuesday, and applies to policemen called in from the province to the Greek capital as well as to those serving in "particularly difficult circumstances," the source said.
"Everything goes well, but a difficult road lies ahead," Nassiakos said in the daily marching order to Greek police.
Some 40,000 police officials shield the Games from eventual extremist attacks, alongside another 70,000 army, navy, coastguards and firemen.
Greek security personnel are compensated for their Olympic engagement with a bonus reaching up to 2,500 euros (3,000 dollars). The bonus had sparked protests by Greek public sector workers involved in the Games' who did not receive the extra payment.
