BAGHDAD, Aug 17 (AFP) - A US soldier was killed and a number of other soldiers wounded in a series of attacks in Shiite militia leader Moqtada Sadr's Baghdad stronghold, the US military said Tuesday.
The soldier was killed and three armoured vehicles destroyed in the series of rocket-propelled grenade and improvised bomb attacks in eastern Baghdad, a statement said. "A number of soldiers were also wounded."
A spokesman added that the attacks all took place in the vast Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City, a stronghold of Sadr's militia.
Based on the most recent statistics on the Pentagon website, 703 US soldiers have been killed in action in Iraq since last year's invasion.
