ANKARA - Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Tuesday that Turkey would continue its initiatives for restoration of peace and stability in Georgia, noting that Turkey attached high importance to Georgia`s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Speaking to reporters after he was briefed by Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan about the recent developments in Caucasus, Gul said Turkey was always closely interested in the developments in the Caucasus.
Gul said, "the news report that Russia halted military operations is a positive development. I hope that this positive development will turn into a cease-fire soon. Implementation of cease-fire decision is very important. I believe that both parties would be careful to stop further bloodshed."
Gul said Turkey supported initiatives of European Union, OSCE and UN Secretary General for restoration of peace, noting that, "it is pleasing that Turkish government immediately started humanitarian aid to Georgia as political initiatives are underway."
