Three Demonstrators Shot By Chavez Supporters In Venezuela

CARACAS, Aug 16 (AFP) - At least three people were wounded by gunshots Monday after supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez opened fire on opposition demonstrators gathering in eastern Caracas, rescue services said.
Rescuers could be seen near Altamira Square assisting a woman who had suffered gunshot wounds through her leg.
Rescuers who asked not to be identified said at least two more people had been wounded. Armed police circled the square as people fled and others searched for Chavez supporters they claimed were still in the area.
Witnesses at the scene said the people who opened fire were on motorbikes.
A few dozen demonstrators stood around a Venezuelan flag soaked with the blood of one of the wounded and shouted "Murderers! Murderers!" in reference to the Chavez supporters and "Fraud!" at the president's victory in Sunday's referendum on his term in office.
A few hundred people remained at the square after others fled the area. Curious onlookers stood near Altamira Square, a space that has become emblematic of the opposition.
