UN Official Calls On Turkey To Make Asylum Law

ANKARA - A high level UN official in Turkey called on Turkish government to make a law on asylum.
"Asylum system in Turkey has deficiencies and loopholes," Metin Corabatir, spokesman of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Turkey, said on Friday.
Corabatir recalled that Turkey was a major transit route for human trafficking and said Turkey had admitted the need for an asylum law and prepared a national action plan on the matter in 2005.
He said refugee centers to be established in 6 Turkish provinces was a major step for Turkey. Corabatir said an EU funded project would be carried to establish these centers.
Nearly 7,000 asylum-seekers asked Turkey to grant refuge in the first half of this year, Corabatir said, adding that this number could reach up to 16,000 at the end of the year.
