TBILISI - Georgian Foreign Minister Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili told AFP on Friday that Georgia is facing "aggression" from Russia, as she appealed to the international community to help.
"The current situation in Georgia is extremely alarming. There is a threat of even more large-scale Russian aggression against Georgia.... Georgia faces an existential threat amid Russian aggression," Tkeshelashvili said.
"Russian aviation is bombarding both military and civilian targets in Georgia, peaceful towns and villages," she added in an interview.
"We ask the international community as a whole to act, to react. The international community must convince Russia to halt aggression."
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said earlier that most of South Ossetia had been "liberated" in an overnight offensive. Russia said it had sent troops to South Ossetia to defend its nationals and peacekeepers.
