Northern Algeria Shaken by 4.1-Magnitude Earthquake

A moderate earthquake struck northern Algeria on Saturday, 14 August 2004, with no immediate reports of injuries or property damage, according to Algerian authorities.

The tremor registered 4.1 on the Richter scale and occurred at 6:34 p.m. local time (1734 GMT). Algeria's center for research into astronomy, astrophysics, and geophysics placed the epicenter near Ain Oussera, a town roughly 230 kilometers (140 miles) south of the capital, Algiers.

The country remains seismically active. A powerful quake in the Algiers area in May 2003 left approximately 2,300 people dead and more than 10,000 others wounded.
