SAN SALVADOR, Aug 14 (AFP) - A bus plunged into a ravine near the town of Carolina, El Salvador Saturday, killing at least 35 people and injuring 26 others, police said.
"A total of 35 people, including seven children, were killed, and many others who were seriously injured have been taken to hospitals in the area," police spokeswoman America Ortiz told AFP.
Another 26 people, including several children, were taken to local hospitals. The most seriously hurt victims were taken by helicopter to the capital San Salvador, some 167 kilometers (104 miles) west of Carolina.
The bus was traveling near Carolina at around 8:00 am (1400 GMT) when it fell off a 100-meter (328-foot) deep ravine. Ortiz said officials did not yet know what caused the accident.
She noted that the passengers were part of an evangelical church group who were traveling to a tourist area for some sort of ceremony.
