MERSIN - Turkey`s southern Mersin province, which attracts the attention of tourists with its clean sea, untouched nature and historical heritage, has been displaying efforts to become a popular holiday destination for tourists all year long.
While creating new business opportunities for investors in beach tourism, officials also try to turn the city into an important center for faith tourism and winter sports.
In an interview with A.A, Mersin Governor Huseyin Aksoy said on Friday that officials continuously carried out activities in an effort to create new investment opportunities for the representatives of tourism sector.
"In the upcoming period, our province will become a popular destination that will attract tourists all year long," Aksoy said.
Aksoy also said that declaration of June 2008-June 2009 period as "the year of St. Paul" would contribute to the improvement of faith tourism in Mersin.
Saint Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, lived in Tarsus town of Mersin for a long time. Therefore, the Vatican declared Tarsus as a site of "pilgrimage".
Aksoy also said that Mersin`s Karbogazi region would become the 24th winter tourism center of Turkey soon.
