Radical Iraqi Shiite Cleric Sadr Wounded Says His Spokesman

NAJAF, Iraq, Aug 13 (AFP) - Radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr was wounded, his spokesman told AFP on Friday.
"He was wounded in three places and his condition is not known yet," said Sheikh Ahmed al-Shaibani from inside the revered Imam Ali mausoleum.
Another Sadr aide said the cleric was wounded early Friday morning.
"It happened at about 7:00 am (0300 GMT) inside the old city," said Ali al-Yasseri.
Tense and glum looking fighters roamed the mausoleum area.
"He is our leader and we would be lost without him as we were lost when his father died," said Faris al-Husseini, 27.
"I hope he will heal very soon and that his injuries are minor."
Heavy clashes raged Friday in the Maidan Square area east of the shrine, according to an AFP correspondent, as US troops and Iraqi forces closed in on Sadr`s militia in the heart of Najaf.
The cleric`s Najaf home was raided Thursday by US troops who found it empty.
Sadr is the scion of a prominent religious family. His father Mohammed Sadek al-Sadr was killed in 1999 by the henchmen of Saddam Hussein for speaking out against the ousted leader`s regime.
