Pope Calls For Peace During Olympic Games

VATICAN CITY, Aug 12 (AFP) - Pope John Paul II called for all weapons to fall silent during the Olympic Games which begin in Athens Friday, in a message to Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos.
The games should be a "an opportunity of fraternity between peoples and cultures because sports is a universal language of human relations", said the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
He also thanked members of the Olympic committees, organizers, official delegates and athletes for making the 16-day event possible.
