U.N. Secretary General Welcomes Decision To Initiate Comprehensive Talks In Cyprus

NEW YORK - United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he welcomed the decision made by the two leaders in Cyprus to start comprehensive negotiations for resolution of Cyprus problem.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Ki-moon reaffirmed full support of the United Nations on efforts to be exerted for a solution that is acceptable for both parties.
The statement also said new UN Cyprus Special Envoy Alexander Downer was planning to travel to the island next week to contribute to peace process.
Separately, Gonzalo Gallegos, a U.S. State Department Spokesman, said U.S. welcomed decision of the two leaders in Cyprus to start comprehensive talks.
