ISTANBUL - The content of an indictment on "Ergenekon" investigation, which was recently accepted by a high criminal court in Istanbul, have been revealed on Friday.
The "summary" section of the indictment, accepted by the High Criminal Court no:13, includes explanations regarding the initiation of the investigation and seizure of hand grenades in Umraniye district of Istanbul.
The indictment said the investigation led the officials to a terrorist organization named "Ergenekon", which has not been the subject of any criminal case previously and which has different objectives and activities when compared to other terrorist organizations.
"It has been determined that the nearest goal of the organization is to carry out activities that will cause governmental weakness in the country and to create a chaotic atmosphere that will spoil the public order, moreover, as a final goal, the organization aims to make people approve an unlawful attempt to be carried out against the government in such a chaotic atmosphere and to take over the government through an unlawful intervention," the indictment said.
It also focuses on the seizure of confidential state documents and assassination plans targeting several important figures in Turkey.
The indictment also stated Ergenekon organization did not have a connection with Turkish Armed Forces and National Intelligence Organization.
"Ergenekon" indictment also claims that retired Gen. Veli Kucuk and Workers' Party (IP) chairperson Dogu Perincek shall be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment twice.
-INDICTMENT ON ERGENEKON PROBE-
The High Criminal Court no:13 in Istanbul agreed Friday to hear the Ergenekon case. The court accepted the 2455 pages long indictment compiled in 441 folders about 86 suspects.
The first hearing of the case will be held on October 20th at a prison complex in Silivri town of Istanbul.
-ERGENEKON PROBE-
An alleged criminal network that came to be known as "Ergenekon" was revealed after police seized hand grenades, TNT explosives and fuses in a shanty house in Istanbul on June 12th, 2007. Several Turkish figures, including retired senior army officers, were detained and sent to prison within the scope of the investigation.
The indictment regarding the operation "Ergenekon" was filed at an Istanbul court last week, indicting 86 people on charges of attempting to overthrow Turkish government. The 2455-page indictment includes 86 suspects, 47 of whom are in prison.
Prosecutors accuse the suspects of "being members of an armed terrorist organization, aiding the armed terrorist organization, attempting to overthrow Turkish government by force, inciting people to armed insurgency, possessing and throwing explosives, instigating these crimes, instigating the attack on Council of State and bombing of daily Cumhuriyet, having secret documents on state security, recording personal data, encouraging military disobedience, inciting people to enmity and animosity."
