Turkey To Negotiate With German Joint Venture For New Type Submarine Procurement

ANKARA - Turkey decided to launch talks with German joint venture HDW-MFI to procure new type submarines for the Turkish Navy, Turkey's Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul said on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan chaired a meeting of the Turkish Defense Industry Executive Board that convened to discuss procurement of 6 submarines with air independent propulsion (AIP).
Gonul told reporters after the meeting that the board decided to start negotiations with Howaldswerke-Deutsche Werft GMBH and Marine Force International LLP (HDW-MFI) for the procurement which is estimated to cost about 2.5 billion Euros.
Submarines will be constructed at Turkey's Golcuk Naval Shipyard and the first submarine is planned to be delivered in 2015.
Other bidders for Turkish competition were DCNS (Armaris) from France and Navantia S.A. from Spain.
