ISTANBUL - An Istanbul High Criminal Court decided on Monday that the chairperson of a leading business association of Turkey, who was recently arrested within the scope of Operation "Ergenekon", shall be released.
The court took such a decision after the attorney for Sinan Aygun, chairperson of Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO), objected against his detention.
The court also decided to release Barbaros Hayrettin Altintas, who was also under arrest within scope of the same operation, together with Aygun.
Aygun and Altintas will leave prison once the relevant documents regarding the court's decision are delivered to the authorities, officials said. However, they will not be allowed to leave Turkey, sources added.
On the other hand, the court dismissed the objections regarding the detention of 8 people, including retired generals Hursit Tolon and Sener Eruygur.
An alleged criminal network that came to be known as "Ergenekon" was revealed after police seized hand grenades, TNT explosives and fuses in a shanty house in Istanbul on June 12th, 2007 and Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into weapons.
Several Turkish figures, including two retired senior generals Sener Eruygur and Hursit Tolon, were arrested and sent to jail in the beginning of July.
Several other suspects, including another retired general Veli Kucuk, and Dogu Perincek, chairman of Workers' Party (IP), were arrested earlier. They are still in prison.
