ISTANBUL - The indictment about 85 suspects who were detained under the Ergenekon probe is expected to be made public on Monday.
Chief Prosecutor Aykut Cengiz Engin and Deputy Chief Prosecutor Turan Colakkadi are expected to disclose the indictment written by three prosecutors at around 11:00 a.m.
The indictment is envisaged to include 85 suspects including retired Gen. Veli Kucuk and Workers' Party (IP) leader Dogu Perincek. 48 of the suspects are under arrest while the remaining 37 were released to be tried without detention.
The indictment about the "Ergenekon terrorist organization" which was revealed after seizure of grenades and fuses in a shanty house in Umraniye district of Istanbul on June 12th, 2007, was transferred to the national judicial network project and recorded. Later, it was submitted to the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office.
Nearly 2,500-page indictment is composed of 40 chapters. Some 60 pages of the indictment focuses on the armed attack on members of the Council of State, Turkey's highest administrative court, on May 17th, 2006. Names of some people who were assassinated, were also mentioned in the indictment.
Prior to latest arrests, 49 people including Kucuk, Perincek and businessman Kuddisi Okkir, were arrested under the probe. Number of arrestees reduced to 48 after Okkir died of cancer in hospital July 6th. Ilhan Selcuk, publisher of the Cumpuriyet daily, and Kemal Alemdaroglu, former rector of the Istanbul University, were detained in March 2008. The two were later released on probation.
The indictment will not include those who were detained on July 1st under the probe. An additional indictment will be written for 21 people. Seven of those suspects including retired Gen. and Kemalist Thousand Association Chairman Sener Eruygur, retired Gen. Hursit Tolon, Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO) Chairman Sinan Aygun were arrested.
Number of arrestees increased to 58 after latest arrests.
