ATHENS, Aug 9 (AFP) - The boyfriend of a member of Greece's Olympic judo team on Monday tried to commit suicide, three days after the athlete herself attempted the same by throwing herself off the balcony or his third-floor apartment.
Yiorgos Chryssostomidis, 24, was hospitalised in critical condition in an Athens hospital after he jumped off the same balcony.
Eleni Ioannou, 20, a member of Greek team for the Athens Olympics which open Friday, jumped from the balcony of Chryssostomidis' apartment on Friday after the two had a row.
She, too, was in hospital in Athens in critical condition, suffering heavy injuries to the head and multiple fractures.
"She suffered from teenage psychological problems," her coach Yiorgos Mountakis told state television NET.
According to a police source, Ioannou's boyfriend had drug problems.
Greek media has reported that Chryssostomidis was jealous of his girlfriend and did not want her to move to the athlete's Olympic village.
The bulk of the 400-strong Greek team took up temporary residency in the village on Sunday.
The chief of Greece's Olympic team, Yiannis Papadoyiannakis, has donated blood for Ioannou and said that volunteers and Greek Olympic Committee employees had also given blood and plasma for her.
"She might have to undergo an operation," Papadoyiannakis told a news conference.
Ioannou has been practising judo since the age of four and won the Greek championships in the 78-kilogramme category three years ago. She has been replaced on the Olympic team by Eleni Patsiou, 22.
