Turkish Court Rejects Appeal Against Releases In Ergenekon Probe

ISTANBUL - An Istanbul court on Wednesday rejected prosecutors` appeal against release of 4 people who were detained within the Ergenekon probe last week.
Prosecutors appealed the Istanbul high criminal court decision on release of 4 people, including two prominent journalists, Mustafa Balbay, Ankara representative of daily Cumhuriyet and Ufuk Buyukcelebi, editor-in-chief of daily Halka ve Olaylara Tercuman.
An alleged criminal network that came to be known as "Ergenekon" was revealed after police seized hand grenades, TNT explosives and fuses in a shanty house in Istanbul on June 12th, 2007 and Istanbul Chief Prosecutor`s Office launched an investigation into weapons.
Several Turkish figures, including two retired senior generals Sener Eruygur and Hursit Tolon as well as a business leader Sinan Aygun, was arrested and sent to jail last week.
Several other suspects, including another retired general Veli Kucuk, and Dogu Perincek, chairman of Workers` Party (IP), were arrested earlier. They are still in prison.
