Swiss Cyclist Camenzind Barred From Olympics After Failing Drugs Test

GENEVA, Aug 9 (AFP) - Swiss cyclist Oscar Camenzind has been excluded from Switzerland`s team for the Olympic Games in Athens after he failed a drugs test, the Swiss Olympic committee said Monday.
The 1998 world champion tested positive for the banned endurance drug EPO (erythropoietin) during training on July 22, the committee said in a statement.
Under Swiss cycling federation rules, a rider is automatically suspended if a first anti-doping test is positive while awaiting the outcome of a second test.
Camezind`s replacement in the Swiss team has not yet been named.
The 33 year-old was also fired with immediate effect from his Phonak team.
Zurich-based Phonak said in a statement that Camenzind accepted full responsibility for the incident.
"Every rider who, during racing or training, is tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance, or carries such a substance with him, must count on being dismissed immediately," Phonak team manager Urs Freuler said.
