Turkish Parliamentary Committee Begins Debates On Kyoto Protocol

ANKARA - Turkish parliamentary committee on foreign affairs began on Wednesday debates to ratify Kyoto Protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol is a document referring to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change aiming at reducing greenhouse gases that cause climate change.
Turkish Environment & Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu attended the committee meeting and informed MPs on the Kyoto process.
He said Turkey had signed the UN convention but not become a party to the Kyoto Protocol.
Eroglu said 181 countries and an economic cooperation union ratified the Kyoto Protocol so far, however, he said there was unfairness regarding the protocol.
"Some countries have no responsibilities but some countries are obliged to financially support other countries," he said.
Eroglu stated that talks were under way to correct this unfair situation, adding two more meetings would take place in Denmark and Poland in the coming months.
"It is really important for Turkey to become a party to the protocol at this phase," Eroglu.
Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on December 11th, 1997, and went into force on February 16th, 2005.
