WASHINGTON - US employers shed 62,000 nonfarm jobs in June signaling that the world's largest economy is struggling to maintain momentum, a Labor Department report showed Friday.

The national unemployment rate held steady last month at 5.5 percent.

The number of job losses was slightly worse than most economists had expected.

Job losses were heavy in the construction, manufacturing and retail sectors as well as other industries.
