GREENS TO CONVENE IN TURKEY FOR EU
European Parliament Greens Group decided to convene its general assembly in Istanbul aiming to support Turkey.
European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen and German Foreign Minister Fischer will also attend the meeting which will take place between October 18 and 20.

TALKS WITH IMF INTENSIFIED ON SIX TOPICS
Technical talks carried out with International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation led by Turkey Desk Chief Reza Moghadam were accelerated.
It was reported that the talks were carried out under macro framework, balance of payments, budget policies, banking reform and monetary policies.
IMF delegation is expected to depart from Turkey today after completing its contacts.

EVERY POINT ON RAILWAY TRACK IS DANGEROUS
Passenger transportation on Istanbul-Ankara railway line, which was closed after the accident, will start on Saturday.
However, Chamber of Civil Engineers think it was a great mistake to re-open this line before examinations are completed because stability of this line was spoiled after studies for the high speed train.

LAND MINE TRAP: TWO DIE, ONE INJURED
Two people died and another one was injured when a landmine exploded in Dargecit township in southeastern Mardin province.
A civilian vehicle hit the landmine planted on the road by the members of the terrorist organization.
Gendarme teams started an operation after the explosion.

RE-TRIAL OF FOUR FORMER DEP DEPUTIES TO START ON OCTOBER 22
Former deputies of the Democracy Party (DEP) will appear at the court once again on October 22, 2004.
The Supreme Court of Appeals Department no: 9 sent the chart of former DEP deputies Leyla Zana, Orhan Dogan, Hatip Dicle and Selim Sadak to a local court after overturning decision of the Ankara State Security Court no: 1.
The re-trial will start on October 22, 2004.

BALANCE IN TSK PRESERVED
Decisions taken during regular meeting of the Higher Military Board (YAS) between August 2-5 were disclosed. Under the decisions which will take effect as of August 30, 2004, Land Forces Commander Gen. Aytac Yalman, Gendarmerie Commander Gen. Mehmet Sener Eruygur and Third Army Commander Gen. Oktar Ataman retired. Gen. Yasar Buyukanit is appointed as the Land Forces Commander and Gen. Fevzi Turkeri is appointed as the Gendarmerie Commander. Gen. Hilmi Ozkok will remain as the Chief of General Staff and any change was not made in Naval Forces Commander and Air Forces Commander posts. Admiral Ozden Ornek will continue command the Naval Forces and Gen. Halil Ibrahim Firtina will continue to serve as the Air Forces Commander. Meanwhile, YAS decided to discharge twelve military personnel for violation of military discipline.

ERDOGAN DUE TO GREECE
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will leave for Greek capital Athens on August 13 to attend opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games. Earlier, Prime Minister Costas Caramanlis of Greece invited Prime Minister Erdogan to Athens to attend the opening ceremonies.

AK PARTY PARLIAMENTARIAN LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF HIS CONSCIENCE
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Parliamentarian Mehmet Dulger said there was ''administrative deficiency'' in high-speed train project, and that The Turkish State Railways (TCDD) Director General had to resign after the incident.
Dulger said, ''I thought for four minutes after I wrote my password in the voting. If this claimed lives of 39 people, it would claim 139 lives in the future. Continuation of such a structure is not beneficial.''
Republican Peoples Party (CHP), after rejection of the censure motion against Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim, is planning to force the minister to resign by turning the train accident's process into a booklet and distributing it to people.

CLAIM OF TURKISH DRIVER: THOSE WHO COULD NOT READ KORAN WERE KILLED
It was reported that the group linked to al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed nearly 50 people including Osman Alisan who went to Iraq together with his four friend as they could not read Koran.
Another Turkish driver, who was an eye-witness of the incident, said the armed group stopped the convoy in Filfil township, 70 km to the Turkish border, and later released those who could read Koran and killed the others.

UNURLU AND DEMIR RETURN TO TURKEY
Sait Unurlu and Abdurrahman Demir, the Turkish truck drivers who were freed in Iraq on Wednesday, will return to Turkey. Turkish Embassy officials in Baghdad said that Unurlu and Demir were brought to the embassy after being freed. Later, the drivers left the embassy to return to Turkey. Tawhid and Jihad group in Iraq said that it decided to release Demir and Unurlu after their company pledged to stop ferrying goods to U.S. forces in Iraq. Meanwhile, other Turkish truck drivers Aytullah Gezmen and Tevfik Alkan have still been missing.

TWO TERRORISTS KILLED IN DIYARBAKIR
Security forces killed two terrorists in a clash in Mardinkapi district in Turkey's southeastern Diyarbakir province. Diyarbakir Police Chief Orhan Okur said that security forces encountered a group of terrorists in the morning in Hevsel Bahceleri neighborhood in Mardinkapi and called them to ''surrender''. A clash erupted between security forces and terrorists as they responded their call by opening fire and in the clash security forces killed two terrorists, he said.

SEPTEMBER, CRITICAL MONTH
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will pay his first visit to Germany for the European Union (EU) report that would be announced on October 6.
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul will go to Maastrich for EU Foreign Ministers summit. Verheugen will for the last time visit Turkey at the end of this month.

PRELIMINARY REPORT COMPLETED
Green light was shed to Ankara before Turkey report of the EU which would constitute a basis for the December summit would be made public on October 6.
In the report of the EU Independent Commission, which was set up to express opinion about Turkey's full membership to the EU, it was stressed that Turkey's full membership to the EU was indispensable.

Since the State Security Courts-DGMs were dissolved in line with Turkey's recent EU reforms packages, Ankara High Criminal Court no: 11 will hear the case. The re-trial will start on October 22, 2004.
