Two Kurdish Rebels Killed In Clash In Turkey

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Aug 5 (AFP) - Turkish security forces on Thursday killed two Kurdish rebels in a clash outside Diyarbakir, the main city of the country's predominantly Kurdish southeast, local officials said.
The fighting erupted as part of a security operation that was launched last week after suspected militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked a police station in Diyarbakir, killing a guard and wounding a policeman.
Security forces surrounded a farming field outside Diyarbakir where a group of PKK guerrillas were believed to have taken refuge after the attack on the police station.
Another five militants have been captured since the operation began last week, officials said.
The PKK, now also known as KONGRA-GEL, ended a five-year unilateral ceasefire with the government on June 1, raising tensions in the mainly Kurdish southeast.
Some 37,000 people have been killed since the PKK took up arms for Kurdish self-rule in the region in 1984.
