MUGLA (CIHAN) - A moderate earthquake rattled the southwestern Turkish bay of Gökova on Tuesday at 4:11 pm but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The tremor measuring 5,0 on the Richter scale occurred in the Gökova Bay in offing of the Aegean Sea near province of Mugla, southwestern Turkey, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory House website said.
The residents of the neighboring cities including Mugla also noticed the moderate earthquake.
Earthquakes happen frequently in Turkey, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Anatolian fault. Turkish people are very sensitive to tremors following very serious earthquakes in recent years.
A mild earthquake rattled the town of Bodrum, near the southwestern Turkish city of Mugla today morning.
Last week, a mild tremor on magnitude of 4.6 in eastern city of Agrý, killed one person and injured six.
Eighteen people were killed and 21 wounded during a moderate earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1 earlier this month whose epicenter was near the eastern Turkish town of Doðubeyazýt, in Agri province near the Iranian Border.
A moderate tremor measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale late March in the eastern Turkish province of Erzurum had killed 9 people and injured more than 100 others.
One of Turkey's worst quakes was recorded in August 1999. Measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 17 thousand people and destroyed or damaged thousands of buildings in North-Western Anatolia.
