FORT BRAGG, North Carolina, Aug 3 (AFP) - US Army Private Lynndie England arrived at a courtroom here Tuesday for a hearing that could lead to a 38-year jail term for abusing Iraqi detainees.
A pregnant England, 21, showed no emotion as she arrived in military dress with her legal team. She did not comment to reporters as she was escorted into the courtroom by several military policemen.
The onetime jailer faces a total of 19 charges, ranging from the abuse and humiliation of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison to photographing them naked and committing sexual acts. England is currently confined to the base at Fort Bragg.
As the hearing commenced and Colonel Denise Arn, the presiding judge, asked if she had any questions, the diminutive England replied: "No, ma'am."
The judge is due to hear testimony from soldiers who served with England at Abu Ghraib and numerous other officers.
England hit the headlines after graphic photographs of her posing with often naked Iraqi detainees were released to the media earlier this year.
In one particularly graphic image, she was shown in the prison holding a leash attached to the neck of a naked detainee who was sprawled on the floor.
