Turkey's Ak Party Slams Constitutional Court Decision On Headscarf

ANKARA - An official of Turkey`s ruling party said on Friday that Constitutional Court`s decision that overturned an amendment which lifted headscarf at universities was a violation of the principle of separation of powers.
Speaking to reporters after a party meeting chaired by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Justice & Development (AK) Party Deputy Chairman Dengir Mir Mehmet Firat said that Constitutional Court decision was a direct interference in parliament`s legislative power.
On Thursday, Turkey`s top court ruled that headscarves can not be worn at universities, overturning a constitutional amendment that Turkish parliament passed in February.
"These legal amendments were not a decision of a political party. They emerged as the will of Turkish Parliament," Firat said.
Reminding that the amendment was approved by 411 deputies out of 550, Firat said, "boundaries of the decision should be carefully assessed considering parliament`s legislative power and the principle of separation of powers stated expressly in the constitution."
