E.U. Rapporteur On Cancellation Of Amendment On Headscarf Issue

BRUSSELS - European Parliament`s Turkey Rapporteur Ria Oomen-Ruijten said on Friday that a new constitution, which would put basic freedoms on the center of judiciary system, was necessary in Turkey.
Turkey`s Constitutional Court, on Thursday, cancelled a constitutional amendment lifting ban on wearing headscarves at universities.
Oomen-Ruijten said the decision showed that Turkey needed modernization, and she wanted a new constitution to assure democracy, supremacy of law, social harmony and religion-state separation.
Also, Joost Lagendijk, co-chairman of Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission, said that current situation gave the government the opportunity to present a brand new draft constitution which would cover entire Turkish people not a specific group in terms of basic freedoms.
