WASHINGTON, Aug 2 (AFP) - US Treasury Secretary John Snow said Monday the entire financial system was working normally despite a terror alert, and the country "will not be intimidated."
Financial markets, institutions and the overall sector were operating normally, Snow said in a statement.
"I applaud the financial services industry for remaining open for business in the face of yesterday's reporting," he said.
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge warned Sunday that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network planned attacks on landmarks including the New York Stock Exchange and the IMF and World Bank headquarters in Washington.
Also targetted were Citigroup buildings in New York and the Prudential Financial offices in northern New Jersey.
Financial sector workers demonstrated the "resiliency and strength" of the system, Snow said.
"While we must always remain vigilant against terror, we will not be intimidated and prevented from enjoying our lives and exercising our freedoms," the chief US economic policymaker said.
"Our resolve is indivisible and unyielding."
