IZMIR (CIHAN) - Champions Fenerbahce gained a morale boost on Sunday for the 2004-2005 season by hammering Italian giant Juventus in Izmir.
Two goals from experienced striker Pierre Van Hooijdonk in the second half fired the Yellow Canaries onto a 2-0 victory over Fabio Capello's team.
The first half of the match ended in a 0-0 tie as Juventus captain Del Piero failed to convert on a penalty kick. Fenerbahce's keeper Volkan Demirel made an excellent save.
Dutch prolific striker Hooijdonk found the net from a long-range free-kick when the ball deflected into the net. It was Pierre Van Hooijdonk on target again in the 86th minute when he found the target.
Fenerbahce's German coach Daum said that team played complete football.
The proceeds of the friendly match were allocated to a foundation established in the name of former Izmir Mayor Ahmet Piristina who died of a heart attack.
Fenerbahce's reserves also faced a combined team from Izmir's soccer clubs on the same day and won their match 3-2.
Meanwhile, Turkish giants Galatasaray edged out 2004 Champions League winner Porto 2-1 in the USA on Sunday in a confidence building match in the Champions World Series ahead of their Turkish league season opener next week.
Cim Bom's goals came from Hakan Sükür and Arif Erdem. Maniche of Porto scored a consolation goal for Portuguese team.
Galatasaray coach Georghe Hagi praised the performance of his team saying, "We fought to the end. We played well."
The Champions World Series features 11 friendly matches at eight stadiums in the United States and Canada, involving the clubs Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Roma, Milan AC, Celtic, Porto, Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
In another friendly match, Besiktas was beaten by German Hertha Berlin 3-2.
